What Is MSME?

The full form of MSME is Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises. The Indian government introduced the concept of MSME under the MSMED Act (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development) of 2006, and the Ministry of MSMEs governs the regulatory framework and monitors the policies for the MSME sector.

Types Of MSME

Under the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development (MSMED) Act 2006, there are three types of MSMEs. Each category has its own set of benefits and characteristics tailored to support businesses of different capacities and sizes. 

Micro Enterprises 

Within the MSME domain, micro-enterprises are the smallest unit. These types of enterprises have an investment limit capped at Rs 2.5 crores in plant, machinery, or equipment, and an annual turnover of up to Rs 10 crores. Generally, micro enterprises carry out small-scale operations and are typically family-owned and operated, with a limited number of employees. 

Although these enterprises have a low turnover threshold, they play a critical role in the manufacturing and service sectors. Microenterprises have the potential to contribute to local economies by providing employment opportunities.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs)

SMEs' investment limit is capped at Rs 25 crores in equipment, plant, and machinery, with an annual turnover of up to Rs 100 crores. Small and medium enterprises are considered more formalized than micro enterprises, as they have larger workforces and more complicated organizational structures.

This type of enterprise plays an important role in driving the country's economic growth by enhancing competitiveness across various industries and facilitating innovation. In simpler terms, an SME occupies a middle ground between Micro and Medium enterprises. 

Medium Enterprises

The largest unit in the MSME category is the medium enterprise. A medium enterprise investment limit is capped at Rs 125 crore in equipment, plant, and machinery with an annual turnover of up to Rs 500 crore. Such enterprises work with a large number of employees, are generally well-established, and have a structured organizational framework. 

Medium enterprises are typically the backbone of the economy, making enormous contributions by generating employment and supporting large-scale production. 

What Is MSME Registration

Also known as Udyam registration, MSME registration was introduced by the government of India in 2006. However, for MSMEs, registration is not mandatory by law, but it is definitely beneficial for the business. This is because registration alone provides the business with an array of benefits, including access to loans, structuring, tax considerations, and credit facilities. 

The MSME registration is done online using the Udyam registration portal. For any enterprise to apply for the MSME registration, it must fulfill the following MSME criteria. 

Please note that previously, the government categorized any enterprise as an MSME based on its investment in equipment, plant, or machinery. However, the government later revised its protocol, and the MSME categorization is now based on annual investment and turnover criteria. 

According to the Budget 2025 revised MSME classification, the following are the revised and the previous limits:

What Is The MSME Registration Eligibility

Any service industry, manufacturing, retail trade, or wholesale trade that meets the revised MSME classification limits can apply for MSME registration. Any of the following entities that fulfill the MSME set investment and annual turnover criteria are eligible for MSME registration. 

What Documents Are Required For MSME Registration

The following are the MSME registration documents: 

  • Aadhaar Number
  • PAN Number

That's it. In fact, these forms are not meant to be uploaded to the Udyam portal for registration. The MSME owners are required to provide only their Aadhaar number. Other details, such as PAN and GST-linked details of the enterprise, will be auto-fetched by the Udyam portal from the government database. 

How To Apply For MSME Registration Online?

The entire MSME registration process is online. You are required to visit the official Udyam registration portal (udyamregistration.gov.in) to complete your registration. 

There are two categories under which the MSME registration can be done online. 

  1. For new entrepreneurs who are not registered as an MSME or those with EM-II. 
  2. Those with registration as UAM, and those who already have registration as UAM via assisted filing. 

Category 1

Step 1: New entrepreneurs and those with EM-II registration must click "For new entrepreneurs who are not registered yet as MSME or those with EM-II" on the home page. 

Step 2: On the next page, you are required to enter the Aadhaar number and the entrepreneur's name. Next, click the "Validate and Generate OTP" button, enter the OTP you received, and verify your Aadhaar. 

Step 3: Enter the "Type of Organization" and the applicable PAN number. Then click on the "Validate PAN" button. The Udyam portal will auto-fetch PAN details from government databases and validate the representative's PAN. 

Step 4: Once the PAN number verification is done, the registration form will appear on the screen. The enterprise is required to provide its personal details and its enterprise details. 

Step 5: Enter the investment and turnover details, select the declaration, and click the "Submit and Get Final OTP" button. Enter the OTP received and submit the form. 

Step 6: The Udyam Registration Certificate will be sent via email. 

Registration For Entrepreneurs Having UAM

Click on the "For those having registration as UAM" or "For those already having registration as UAM through Assisted Filing" button as given on the homepage of the Udyam portal, and enter the Udyog Aadhaar Number. Select the OTP next. 

The options provided are to obtain the OTP on the mobile or via email as filled in the UAM. Once the OTP options are chosen, click on "Validate and Generate OTP". After entering the OTP, fill in the registration details on the MSME registration form, and your Udyam registration is complete.

What Is The MSME Registration Fees

There is no MSME registration fee. The government has made it free of cost on the official Udyam registration portal website. 

How To Check The MSME Registration Status?

The following is the process to check the MSME registration status. 

Go to the Udyam registration portal. 

Click the "Print/Verify" option, then select the "Verify Udyam Registration Number" option. 

Enter the reference number and captcha code, then click the verify button. 

MSME Registration Certificate Download

The MSME ministry issues an e-certificate, also known as the Udyam Registration Certificate, to MSMEs in India. Once the MSME registration process is complete, entrepreneurs receive the MSME registration certificate. The certificate has a QR code on it that links to the enterprise's details. 

The following is the process of downloading the MSME registration certificate.

Step 1: Go to the Udyam registration portal. 

Step 2: Click the "Print/Verify" option, then select "Print Udyam Certificate". 

Step 3: Enter the "Udyam Registration Number" and "Mobile Number", select the OTP option, and click the "Validate and Generate the OTP " button. 

Step 4: You will receive the OTP on your mobile/email. Enter the OTP and click "Validate OTP and login". 

Step 5: Post successful login, take a printout of the Udyam registration certificate.
